There are direct flights from Tokyo and Osaka into Gold Coast Airport courtesy of Jetstar. The Gold Coast Airport Marathon is the favoured resort marathon in Australia for Japanese runners. About 2,000 Japanese runners are expected to run the Gold Coast Airport Marathon in 2010. A number of well known Japanese celebrities have taken part in recent years including dual Olympic medallist Yuko Arimori, the first Japanese professional lifesaver Seiji Iinuma, magazine model and television personality Rie Hasegawa, Asics mascot Erika Ogushi and television personalities Hanako Miyagawa and Kunihiro Matsumura. The Gold Coast Airport Marathon also has a sister marathon relationship with the Senshu International Marathon held in Osaka each February.
The Gold Coast Airport Marathon is promoted heavily in Japan through partners Tourism Australia, Tourism Queensland, Gold Coast Tourism, Asics, Jetstar and Gold Coast Airport.
